Trustee Expressions of Interest
We are calling for expressions of interest for the position of a Communications Trustee, for an initial term of two years, from people who have the skills and expertise to support the Board’s governance responsibilities. This is a super exciting opportunity to support Generation Vote’s kaupapa and gain governance experience!
This position is responsible for leading clear and consistent messaging that builds the Trust’s profile and outreach to likeminded organisations.
In addition to the Communications portfolio, Trustees are expected to contribute to projects alongside general meeting preparation. The Board and Branches may hold strategic planning sessions with full participation by Trustees required. As all positions in Generation Vote are entirely voluntary, there is no remuneration for this role.
Communications Trustee Role Description
The Communications Trustee role is crucial to the success of building the Trust’s vision. This role involves leading clear and consistent messaging that builds the Trust’s profile and leading outreach to likeminded organisations.
Key responsibilities:
- Develop proactive communications that build the Trust’s brand and external positioning
- Develop a media and communications strategy that supports the Trust’s strategy and increases its profile
- Prepare responses to events and issues arising in the civic education space, as required
- Proactively develop relationships with relevant external organisations
- Manage the Trust’s social media presence and website
- Chair the internal Communications Committee to support consistent messaging across the Trust
Our ideal candidate may have more than one of the following:
- experience working with Generation Vote;
- experience in communication and / or outreach-focused engagement roles;
- experience in development and implementation of communications plans and social media campaigns;
- experience in governance or leadership, including in the non-profit sector;
- experience in website management and design;
- particular interest in civics education, youth engagement, and Aotearoa New Zealand’s education system;
- be strategically focused on achieving the Trust’s mission; and
- is reliable and can work with Board members, Executive members, and educators.
Commitment:
- Prepare for and attend monthly virtual Board meetings (1-2 hours) which may include reading documents and preparing feedback for discussion;
- Lead or contribute to additional projects and committees;
- Chair the internal Communications Committee to support consistent messaging across the Trust.
Overall, the time commitment is 5 hours per week; and the initial term of service is two years and renewable if desired.
The role is unpaid.
About Us
The Trust currently oversees programme delivery in Otago and Wellington. Our mission is to deliver high-quality civics education workshops that keep students front of mind – it means our programmes need to be adaptable and engaging to be accessible to the different ways young people learn.
As the governing body of the Trust and to satisfy its legal obligations, the Board is responsible for:
- determining the Trust’s mission and values;
- strategic and organisational planning;
- ensuring strong financial oversight and management;
- sourcing funding and resource development;
- approving and monitoring the Trust’s programmes;
- enhancing the Trust’s public image; and
- assessing the Trust’s own performance.
Board Members are expected to:
- understand and advocate for the Trust’s mission, policies, programmes, and needs;
- follow the Trust’s policies and Board resolutions, including as to non-partisanship;
- disclosure of any Conflict of Interest annually and update when necessary, as well as disclose potential conflicts before meetings and actual conflicts during meetings; and
- maintain confidentiality about all internal matters of the Trust.
